HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg Municipal Judge Vanessa Jones was sworn in as interim justice court judge during Thursdays meeting of the Forrest County Board of Supervisors.
Jones replaces Deborah Gambrell on an interim basis. Gambrell vacated the seat when she was appointed by Governor Haley Barbour to be the new chancery judge for the 10th district.
The supervisors say Jones was selected because she is an African American judge and the district is predominantly minority, as well as her eight years experience as a judge, and they were looking for someone who would not run for the office.
"It's going to require as service does in my family has a history of service to the citizens of Forrest County and also to the United States Military," said Jones. "You just shuffle what you have and serve the people. I'm ready for that challenge.
Jones will serve a dual role as municipal and justice court judge until the end of the year.
