HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Mississippi Department of Transportation has completed several Intelligent Technology System (ITS) projects that are designed to improve drive times and reduce congestion on Hattiesburg's main roads.
The systems include the installation of new fiber optic cable, additional traffic cameras, vehicle detection systems, highway advisory radio systems, and seven dynamic message signs.
Traffic engineers may now view real time traffic from the systems cameras and if conditions warrant implement new, special event, or emergency plans.
According to Program Manager Mike Stokes the system will enable Traffic Management Center, (TMC) operators to provide motorists with roadway information through the Highway Radio Advisory System or the Dynamic Message signs, and increase signal timing efficiency.
While state and local TMC operators are using the ITS components, the projects are under contractual testing period until July 30, 2011.
