Pine Belt services honor Doctor Martin Luther King Junior

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Celebrations marking the birthday of Doctor Martin Luther King Junior were held throughout the Pine Belt Sunday.

Members of the First Trinity Baptist Church as well as others from the community turned out for a service to honor the slain civil rights leader.

Featured speaker during the service was Pastor Willie P. Grant of the Martin Luther King Baptist Church in Hattiesburg.

Pastor Dennis Henderson of First Trinity thinks that Doctor King would be happy but not proud of the progress that's been made during the civil rights era.

"We've come a long way but we still have further that we can go," said Henderson. " Not just the black community, but the white community. Just to get out to spread the gospel of peace, the gospel of love and the gospel of giving."

Doctor King would have turned 82 years old Saturday.
