Rawls Springs house fire claims two lives

RAWLS SPRINGS, MS (WDAM) - A Rawls Springs grandmother and her 3-year-old grandchild died this morning when their home caught fire.

Coroner Butch Benedict said Sherry Diane Johnson, 53, and Keyshun Zechariah Johnson died as a result of smoke inhalation.

Fire fighters said the home on Lakewood Loop was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived at the scene about 4:30 Wednesday morning. According to Benedict, the child was staying with his grandmother while his mother was at work.

The grandmother apparently woke up and smelled smoke. She told another daughter in the house to go next door and call 911. Benedict said the grandmother stayed in the home to get the child but apparently was overcome by smoke.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
