JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Jones County Emergency Management participated in a web based weather briefing with the National Weather Service Sunday afternoon.
A significant weather event is unfolding across the state that will dramatically impact travel especially in the central and north part of the state. For the Pine Belt the winter weather may take the form of just a cold rain or have the possibility of freezing rain and drizzle mixed in overnight.
"Jones County is in the transition zone and may escape the worst of the winter weather outbreak," said Don McKinnon, Jones County Emergency Management Director.
Mississippi Power has been preparing for the possibility of power outages caused by the weather. Crews and equipment are on standby ready to respond to any outages.
"Of course they are going to get on those outages as soon as it's safe to do so. But you can't always predict they are going to be their instantly and have the power restored in a couple of hours," said McKinnon. "We do want them to be safe in what they are doing. We want to make sure nobody gets hurt or needless loss of life for something that can be repaired in daylight."
Mississippi Power crews are also prepared to travel to other parts of the state to assist if needed.
