City judge Jones could also serve as justice court judge

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - It appears Hattiesburg muncipal judge Vanessa Jones will become interim justice court judge replacing Deborah Gambrell, if the Hattiesburg City Council okays it. Forrest County Supervisors selected Jones Thursday to replace Gambrell, who was appointed by Governor Haley Barbour as chancery judge for the 10th District.

The supervisors say they based their selection on 3 factors...Jones is African-American and the district is predominantly minority...Jones already has experience as a judge...and Jones has told them she will not run for the office.

The selection apparently prompted today's Hattiesburg City Council meeting where officials discussed personnel behind closed doors. It's believed council members were discussing whether Jones can serve the dual roles on an interim basis.

No decision was made.

Gambrell is expected to submit her resignation Janaury 15.
