Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebrations kick off

HATTIEBURG, MS (WDAM) - An opening ceremony kicking off celebrations in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was held in Hattiesburg.

City leaders and residents gathered  at the C.E.  Roy Community Center to mark the beginning of events held across the pinebelt to mark the birthday of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

At the opening ceremony, Mayor Johnny Dupree gave the welcome and the mistress of ceremony Beverly Magee Commodore spoke on the importance of remembering the legacy King left behind.

"Its important to have this type of event, so that people will get some idea of the legacy of the life of a man who contributed so many contributions towards civil rights and equality for all man kind," said Commodore.

The opening ceremony was held by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Parade Committee of the Pinebelt.
