WDAM Viewpoint: Great news for a new year

What a great way to start the New Year!  Economic development is coming to the Pine Belt.

Governor Haley Barber announced yesterday that Stion…a large manufacturer of solar panels will be locating in the Sunbeam building in Hattiesburg.  Over the next six years the company plans to expand to the point of adding one-thousand jobs to the local work force.  As part of the ever growing environmental industry, this is the type industry that South Mississippi needs.  Stion will turn out high-efficiency, low-cost thin film solar panels with the production line being the first phase of a company investment of $500-million.

Chet Farris, Stion's president and CEO said in a statement that, "Together, the state of Mississippi, Forrest County, and the city of Hattiesburg offer a business-friendly location with a strong resource base of manufacturing."  He went on to say, "We are pleased to partner with them to help increase domestic production of clean energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support the local and national economy."

We are pleased to see this kind of positive growth. We wish the best for Stion in the years ahead and salute all those who had a hand in attracting their facility to the Hub City.
