LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The new year in the Pine Belt is likely to begin with a bang...not from fireworks, but from Mother Nature. Rain and thunderstorms could develop late Friday night and bring lots of rain to our area as we move from 2010 to 2011.
With that in mind, Jones County officials today took part in a special severe weather briefing offered by the National Weather Service. Those officials say we could get several inches of rain from the expected storms.
"We believe that most of the bad weather is going to be contained in the southwest part of the State of Mississippi and not move as far over to Jones County," said Don McKinnon, director of Jones County Emergency Management. "We will, however, be on the look out for some errant storms, some possible super cell thunderstorms and things like that and maybe some wind and a lot of heavy rain, possibly 2 to 4 inches of rain in our area," McKinnon said.
McKinnon says we should be prepared for much colder temperatures after the rain passes through.
