Former Hattiesburg football coach dies

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Former Hattiesburg High School football coach Doug Merchant, who coached prep teams in Mississippi for more than 30 years, has died at the age of 68.

Officials with Billy M. King Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Collins said Friday that Merchant died Wednesday at River Oaks Hospital in Jackson. The cause of death was not made public.

A list of survivors was not immediately available.

Among Merchant's coaching stops were Mize, Monticello, Pearl, Taylorsville, Hattiesburg and Morton. He was also the athletic director at Taylorsville.

In 1990, Merchant lead the Taylorsville team to its first state title. He coached at Hattiesburg from 1993-2000, leading the Tigers to a pair of south state championships.

Funeral services are 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel.

Burial will be in Ora Cemetery in Collins.
