Hub City firefighters give toys for Christmas

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Vieanna Brown of Hattiesburg is all smiles these days and with good reason. She knows children in her family are going to have a great Christmas, thanks to the Hattiesburg Fire Department.

"Because the fire department does what it does, it will enable our children to have Christmas," Brown said Thursday. The Brown family is just one of many being helped by this year's "Toys for Tots" campaign, hosted by the Hattiesburg Fire Department.  About 100 needy kids are getting bicycles, games and other toys from firefighters. They were collected at toy drives or bought earlier this week.

"They take great pride in doing this," said Capt. Brady Ingram of the Hattiesburg Fire Department. "We find it fulfilling to do something like this," Ingram said.

It's not only fulfilling, it's also a tradition at the Hattiesburg Fire Department that dates back decades.

"This is something we've been doing since 1955 and so, we've got 55 years of experience trying to put this together," said Capt. Ingram.

The toys were given out this morning at Station #1 in downtown Hattiesburg.
