Man indicted in 1979 Forrest County murder case

FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A man already serving a life sentence in prison has been officially indicted in the 1979 rape and murder of a Forrest County woman that sent three other innocent men to jail.

Andrew Harris was indicted on December 14 and charged with the rape and murder of Eva Gail Patterson.

Harris has been serving a life sentence for another Forrest County rape committed two years after the Patterson murder. Three men, Phillip Bivens, Larry Ruffin and Bobby Ray Dixon, were sent to prison in the Patterson case, but their convictions were overturned in 2010 after new DNA evidence proved they were innocent.

That same evidence implicated Harris. Larry Ruffin died in prison in 2001. Bobby Ray Dixon died of cancer in November.
