JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - An early morning fire in the Powers Community kept firefighters busy attempting to save the home and its contents.

The fire was reported at around 4:30 a.m. at the home of Don and Sylvia Reeves on Powers Drive.

The couple was asleep and awoke to smoke in the house and discovered fire in the walls and attic. Mr. Reeves attempted to put the fire out with an extinguisher, however the flames had reached the attic and were spreading quickly.

Firefighters from Powers, Glade, and M&M arrived and did an immediate search of the residence to ensure everyone had made it out. Due to the efforts of the nearly 20 volunteers, much of the home and the majority of its contents were saved.

The cause of the fire is not known, but it is believed to have started in an electrical air conditioning outlet.

This was the fourth structure fire response by District 4 Firefighters in a 24 hour period. The others were a building fire at North East Jones Middle School, and an electrical fire on Billbrew Road, and a storage barn fire on Martin Drive in Glade. District 4 also responded to 3 brush fire calls in the same span.
