HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg prevention agency thanked their supporters in local, state, and national government on Monday by hosting an appreciation brunch.
DREAM of Hattiesburg is dedicated to preventing drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse. The brunch at the organization's Hutchinson Avenue location was designed to thank officials for their efforts on behalf of the group.
A second purpose of the event was to educate attendees about the proposed Social Hosting bill. That bill would hold adults responsible for knowingly permitting underage drinking on their property. The bill also calls for fines and possible jail time for offenders. Linda Vasquez is the Executive Director of DREAM of Hattiesburg, Inc.
"Parents or individuals that are adults that are providing alcohol to minors or in a home, they would be responsible for doing something like that. If someone were to be hurt or anything like that we are going to hold them accountable," said Vasquez.
DREAM is part of a state wide coalition that is trying to make the Social Hosting bill become law in Mississippi.
