JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A Jones County couple, their five children, and a third adult escaped unharmed from a fire that destroyed their home early Sunday morning.

The fire was discovered at around 8:30 a.m. at a home on Gilmore Shelby Road near the Powers Community. The father of the house was awoken by popping sounds and discovered the attic was on fire.

By the time all the occupants had been evacuated flames were already shooting through the roof.

Firefighters were able to save a lot of the families personal items, but the home is a total loss.

Volunteer fire units from Sandersville, Powers, Glade, M&M, and Rustin were on the scene for about two and a half hours conducting fire suppression, overhaul, and salvage operations.

The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.
