HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Among the Southern Miss graduates on Friday was one of the football players injured in the November shooting outside of Remington's Hunt Club in Hattiesburg.

Martez Smith received his degree in Interdisciplinary Studies during graduation ceremonies at the Reed Green Coliseum. He is recovering from the injuries he sustained last month that left him wheelchair bound. He wants to thank the public for their prayers and support in the wake of the tragedy.

Smith said he went through a storm and is now waiting for the sunshine and for the Lord to bless him with the ability to walk again.

"Today is real special because back in 2006, I decided to come here for football. But I also knew that the graduation rate was real high here. So it's real special. It's been a long road, and it's finally paying off right now," said Smith.

Smith explained it was a joy to be back in Hattiesburg and he reflected upon the lessons taught by his professors and coaches at Southern Miss.
