HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - The Libraries of Southern Miss are celebrating a notable 75th anniversary on Wednesday. USM is one of a limited number of locations nationwide that house the Federal Depository.

The Depository is a collection of government documents from all United States agencies and various bureaus. Access to these documents is free to the public and Southern Miss is the only location for these materials in the Fourth Congressional District.

Additionally, the Libraries of Southern Miss have recently established a friends program. That initiative is designed in part to spark supplemental funding in light of university budget cuts. Carole Kiehl is the Dean of Libraries for Southern Miss.

"So we are looking for support for the libraries. People who can volunteer or help us raise funds. And also we plan to have an interesting program of events," said Kiehl.

Southern Miss Friends of the Libraries is open to both campus and community members. If you are interested in becoming a member of the group just call 601-266-4241, or visit the circulation desk at any USM library.
