PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Petal High School quarterback Anthony Alford has been honored as the Gatorade Mississippi football player of the year.

Alford, a junior at PHS, threw for 1,399 yards and 16 touchdowns this season. He was picked off just 5 times in 138 passing attempts. Alford also rushed for 1,253 yards and 19 touchdowns on 169 carries.

The award encompasses more than success on the gridiron. Gatorade looks for excellence in athletics, academics and character. Alford keeps an A-minus average in the classroom while also volunteering with the Big Brother/Big Sister program and coaching youth baseball.

The Gatorade player of the year program chooses a football player from each state and the District of Columbia as finalists for its national award, which will be announced in December. Alford is the first player from Petal to receive this honor and the first junior in Mississippi to win it.
