HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - A portion of the AIDS Memorial Quilt was on display Tuesday at Southern Miss.
The quilt panel is one of over 54-thousand that depict the life of someone taken by AIDS. Eight lives were represented on the piece at Southern Miss.
In total, the quilt includes more than 91-thousand names from all facets of society around the world. The quilt will be exhibited throughout the Hattiesburg area this week due to the efforts of the AIDS Services Coalition. Kathy Garner is the Executive Director of the Hub City area organization.
"And people who are twenty to twenty five don't know the things that people went through in the seventies and eighties with HIV. And even though some of these are fairly new panels, this shows that people are affected," said Garner.
The university community also had the opportunity to receive a free rapid HIV test Tuesday at the student union. Results from those tests are available within fifteen minutes.
