HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Seventeen year old Jessica Harris of McComb girl needs a new heart but for complicated reasons her parents insurance will not cover the cost until next January.

Wednesday the Southern Miss Campus Civitan Club and Student Government Association held a fund raiser and birthday party for Jessica at the R-C Cook Student Union Lobby.

Jessica's father took new job teaching early in the year and was able to get health insurance for the family, however the insurance does not cover pre existing conditions for the first 18 months. The pre-existing condition restrictions for children goes away in January under the national health care plan, but that may not be in time for Jessica.

Jessica recently turned 17  so the two organizations decided to invite Jessica to the fund raiser and throw her a birthday party.

Master Chef winner and USM student Whitney Miller donated the cake for the party and aramak provided the punch.

Members of the Civitan Club presented Jessica with a certificate making her a honorary lifetime time member of the club.

Several fundraiser's have been held around the country to help raise the $150,000 it will cost to have the operation.
