ELLISVILLE, MS. (WDAM) - A Jones County Junior College instructor with a passion for literacy is the Mississippi Humanities Council's Teacher of the Year.
Patti Smith was recognized for the honor Tuesday at the school's Fine Arts Auditorium, where she also gave a presentation on the importance of reading.
Smith said some students do not have college level literacy skills. She said changing classroom priorities and encouraging students to take some self initiative and read for both class and pleasure can change that.
"So I think it's time for us to be a little tougher maybe in the classroom and actually get them to actually read those things. And I think that once they get back into the books, they'll realize what they've been missing," said Smith.
The Mississippi Humanities Council promotes the subject and honors an accomplished college instructor each year.
