Shooter identified, suspects in custody in USM student shootings

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg Police have announced the capture of two suspects who they say were accessories after the fact in the shooting of three University of Southern Mississippi football players.

Patricia L. Brown and Cleothus Wilkerson, both of Bassfield have been charged with three counts of accessory after the fact in connection with the aggravated assault. Patricia is the mother of the alleged shooter.

Travis Brown of Purvis, is now charged with three counts of aggravated assault, but is not yet in custody. He is a black male, six feet in height weighing 185 pounds.

Brown, 29, is on parole for cocaine possession and is listed by the Mississippi Department of Corrections as living at 55 Cheyene Circle in Purvis.

Forrest County Sheriff's office, Forrest General Hospital Police, U.S. Marshals, Hattiesburg and USM police worked together to make the arrests.

Police said anyone who aids Brown will also be charged.

The students were shot outside of Remington's Hunt Club in Hattiesburg early Sunday morning. School officials say all three are in fair condition at a local hospital. 

Sgt. Allen Murray with the Hattiesburg Police Department said an altercation took place inside the Hunt Club off Hwy 49 around 1:20 a.m. which then moved outside of the night club where one person opened fire, seriously injuring the players.

Officers Liquori Tate and Benjamin Deen were shot during a traffic stop on May 9, 2015, on East 4th Street.  Both officers later died at Forrest General Hospital from their injuries.  So far, three people have been sentenced in their murders.
