USM ROTC students honor local veterans

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Several dozen Air Force ROTC cadets at Southern Miss are taking part in an annual tribute to local fallen heros. The cadets of Detachment 432 are participating in a 24-hour, "Veterans Vigil" at Hattiesburg Veterans Memorial Park.

It's a prelude to an annual Veterans Day service at the park. As part of the vigil, individual cadets stand guard at the memorial in half-hour watches. It began this morning at 10 o'clock and will end at the beginning of the Veterans Day service Thursday at 10 a.m.

"There's only 48 shifts and some are only helping, but everybody is doing their part," said Cadet Major Ryan Mottley. "Some are taking multiple shifts if they have to," said Mottley.

Nearly 50 cadets are part of the "Veterans Vigil."
