ELLISVILLE, MS. (WDAM) - The best local high school math minds converged Wednesday at Jones County Junior College for the third annual Math Quiz Bowl.
Teams from twenty one Pine Belt area high schools competed for scholarship awards at Jones, prize money and other goodies at JCJC's Advanced Technology Center. Groups of four to five students had ten seconds to come up with the answer to a variety of math problems.
One school with a good reputation in the bowl is Stringer High School. In 2009 the team placed second and one of their members, Zack Brown, answered the highest percentage of questions correctly.
Brown said, "At school you don't necessarily get much competition with math other than grades. And this is a good way to show out and just show that you are good at math. And it's a good way to determine where you stand with the local accelerated math students."
The winning team in the 2010 Math Quiz Bowl receives 25-hundred dollars to split among team members. Their teacher receives a thousand dollars and senior members of the group are given a scholarship award to Jones County Junior College.
