HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - The popular opera from Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, "La Boheme" comes to the stage at Southern Miss Tuesday night.
The performance takes place in Paris, France during 1830 but all songs are performed in Italian.
Southern Miss doctoral student Kathleen Westfall plays one of the title characters named Mimi. Westfall said Mimi is a poor but happy seamstress who falls in love while battling a terrible illness.
Westfall hopes audience members leave "La Boheme" with a greater appreciation for the power of music.
"It tells the story of the bohemians, the artists and the writers and the musicians at the turn of the century, who were very poor but were kind of happy to be so. Because it made them feel very real and very connected to each other as a community. It tells the story of how they lived and loved," said Westfall.
The opera is being performed only twice at the Southern Miss Mannoni Performing Arts Center. It'll be shown November 9th and 11th at 7:30 pm.
