HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - DREAM of Hattiesburg wants Pine Belt residents to take inventory of their medications and throw out any drugs they are no longer using.
The substance abuse prevention agency said prescription drug abuse is on the rise with family members or friends abusing drugs that were not prescribed to them.
To stop this problem, DREAM and other partners are hosting a drop off event Saturday at two different Pine Belt locations. This will enable the public to safely dispose of their unused, unwanted and expired medications.
Both over the counter and legitimate prescription drugs will be included in this event with the exception of needles. Linda Vasquez is the Executive Director of DREAM.
"I think it's really important that people are aware of when they either get their prescriptions filled and they don't use all the prescription they have, they have an opportunity to get rid of those prescriptions in a safe way. Because we don't want individuals throwing prescriptions down the sewer system because it ruins our water supply," said Vasquez.
Vasquez said it's also important for the public to know that their privacy will be maintained at Saturday's event.
The locations for the drop off include Fox's Pizza parking lot in Petal and the Forrest County Multipurpose Center. The drop off times are 10AM to 2PM on November 13th.
