Governor lifts statewide burn ban, but some county bans continue

JACKSON, (WDAM) – Gov. Haley Barbour today announced the lifting of the statewide outdoor burn ban.

Gov. Barbour declared State of Emergency Oct. 6 banning all outdoor burning because of extremely dry conditions.

Officials of the Mississippi Forestry Commission recommended lifting of the statewide ban. However, 17 counties remain under local burn bans.

As of 3:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Forrest, Lamar and Smith counties are the only counties in the WDAM viewing area still imposing a local burn ban.

    Laurel police arrest two men after a short foot chase early Monday morning.  Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the area of Central Avenue and north Pine Street around 2:30 a.m. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed and the suspects jumped from the vehicle in the 300 block of Township Road.  Alex Crews, 20, and James Clark, 38, were apprehended after a short foot chase.     A pedestrian was struck and killed, another seriously injured, and a Biloxi man is behind bars after an early morning wreck in the Hub City.  Justin Williamson, 25, of Biloxi, was arrested and charged with DUI-negligence resulting in death after an early morning crash on U.S. 49 by Interstate-59 and according to Hattiesburg Police Department Capt.
