HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg's historic Beverly Drive-in Theater was destroyed by an early morning fire Saturday.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 3 a.m. after a passing motorist noticed flames coming from the vacant residence under the large screen.
About two dozen firefighters had the blaze under control in about one hour. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
No injuries were reported.
The theater opened in May of 1948 and closed in 1987. It opened again for a few years in 2001.
In 2008, it was placed on a list of the 10 Most Endangered Historic Places in Mississippi.
