State Auditor presents 50K to New Augusta

NEW AUGUSTA, MS (WDAM) - New Augusta is being reimbursed by the state auditor's office for money it lost when it's former city clerk embezzled thousands of dollars from that town. Today, state auditor Stacey Pickering presented New Augusta mayor Albert Garner with a check for $50,000.

The money is recovered from the bond of Emily Holder, New Augusta's former city clerk who pled guilty earlier this year to embezzling more than $53,000 from the town. Holder was sentenced to one year house arrest and was ordered to pay more than $65,000 dollars in restitution, interest and investigative costs.

Between 2006 and 2009, Holder wrote several checks to herself and forged the mayor's signature.
