Southern Mississippi holds a two day symposium.

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The University of Southern Mississippi is looking back on history during a two-day symposium for pioneers who paved the way for many African Americans to attend the University of Southern Mississippi and vote in Forrest County.

Speakers talked about their experiences in the civil rights movement. Many said the city of Hattiesburg has come a long way.

The founder of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party the Civil Rights symposium continues Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Thad Cochran Center.
