Hattiesburg receives $150,000 HUD grant

The following is a press release from The City of Hattiesburg, MS:

The City of Hattiesburg was awarded $150,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which the city submitted an application for in August of 2010. The Community Challenge Planning Grant was created to help support local planning designed to integrate housing, jobs, and transportation.

This grant will fund the Mid-Town Hattiesburg Master Plan and focus on stimulating livability in the mid-town area of the city. This unique area of Hattiesburg daily has the highest concentration of people within a walkable area. Mid-Town Hattiesburg boundaries include the University of Southern Mississippi to the north, Forrest General Hospital to the south, South 31st Avenue to the west, and Highway 49 to the east.

"We knew when we applied for this grant that it would be extremely competitive, with 583 eligible grants applicants, only 42 state and local governments were awarded funds. Hattiesburg is the only city in Mississippi to receive the grant, due in part to the collaborative efforts of the community and business partners who have supported this project and see the future livability opportunities in mid-town Hattiesburg," said Mayor Johnny L. DuPree.

The HUD grant money received will be matched by a combination of local supporters including City of Hattiesburg, Forrest County, Forrest General Hospital, University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg Clinic, HUB Development, LLC, BancorpSouth, Area Development Partnership, and a number of many local private partners.

The outcome of this project is to achieve six livability principles developed through the "Partnership for Sustainable Communities" between HUD, Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency. These agencies joined together to remove traditional barriers between departments to achieve a coordinated approach for housing, economic development, transportation and environmental policies and goals. The development of the Mid-Town Hattiesburg Master Plan will create a mixed-use district for residential, retail and commercial developments that support this important employment node in the City of Hattiesburg.
