HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - The fifth annual Unity in the Community event at the Hub City's Lake Terrace Convention Center attracted hundreds of high school students from throughout Hattiesburg Thursday.
The event is designed to prevent high school students from dropping out.
Teenagers from Hattiesburg, Petal, Forrest and Lamar counties learned about post high school educational opportunities and the importance of budgeting.
This year organizers also hoped to drive home the issue of cyber bullying and safe online practices. Jeanetta Bennett is a spokeswoman for the City of Hattiesburg.
According to Bennett, "A lot of the teens who come are maybe discouraged or frustrated because they don't know their options and what their future holds. And this is just an opportunity to show them what you can do with a college degree, with a high school degree."
Guest speaker presentations and workshops were also part of the day long event.
