Preliminary autopsy released for Hattiesburg woman found dead

PERRY COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A preliminary autopsy shows a Hattiesburg woman found dead in a Perry County cemetery last week died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Sheriff Jimmy Dale Smith said the autopsy indicates she was shot in the chest with a .38 caliber pistol.

Smith says the gun was registered to her and added he is waiting for other results from the autopsy to determine if any gunpowder residue was found on the victim's hands.

The body of Alyne Yvette Carson, 59, was found Wednesday morning at Hollimon Cemetery on Hwy 29 north of New Augusta.

Sheriff Smith said Carson's body was found inside the cemetery, and her 2002 Toyota minivan was parked outside the cemetery.

Carson was very well known in the Pine Belt as a community volunteer working with the girl scouts and the mayor's youth council.
