WAYNE COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The mother of a Wayne County soldier killed in Afghanistan says she is in disbelief.
Diana Newman says it is hard for her to even talk about her son, Army Sgt. Eric C. Newman, a 30-year-old soldier from Waynesboro, who died in a bombing on Oct. 14.
Newman said her son was her life. "I heard a knock on the door and I opened the door and the military men were there and they asked if they could come in. It was like disbelief. It was probably the worst moment of my whole life," she said.
Newman joined the Army in 2006 and soon deployed to Iraq. He went to Afghanistan with the 1st Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment, 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps based at Fort Bragg, N.C.
Funeral services will be at 11 p.m. Saturday at Freeman Chapel. Burial follows at Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery in Wayne County.
Officials hope Wayne County residents will line the streets Thursday to pay honor and tribute Newman when his body returns to Mississippi.
