Students take part in "Walk to School Day"

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Students, parents, educators and city officials in Hattiesburg are putting a new emphasis on "Let's Go Walking." Elementary school kids and their parents were encouraged to leave the cars at home for International Walk to School Day.

City officials and other volunteers helped keep a watchful eye as students at the 6 elementary schools in town made their way to campus, many of them carrying posters for a walk-to-school contest.

The city is using state and federal money to install new sidewalks at all the elementary schools.

About half of those have been completed.
