HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - West 4th Street in Hattiesburg is set to get a face lift and because of it, a few businesses will have to close.
To deal with traffic, the city is expanding the road stretching from Hwy. 49 to Hutchinson Avenue. A turn lane will be put in place, which will require the city to buy up property from two small strip buildings with businesses inside on the North side of the street.
The city will have to make offers for the two properties, one taking up about 17 feet, the other about 6 feet. One of the strip buildings will remain open, the other would no longer have room for parking, which would force the businesses somewhere else.
"It removes a lot of the opposing conflict on 4th. It takes that out of the situation and it also is going to provide a sidewalk on the southern side of the street because there's a lot of pedestrian activity," said Director of Engineering Bert Kuyrkendall
The $2.5 million in funding for the project is coming through MDOT with a local match and being done in phases.
The next phase will take the road improvements from Hutchinson Avenue to Jackson Street.
