Brush fires continue to plaque Jones County firefighters

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Despite the burn ban in Jones County, brush fires continue to spring up at an alarming rate in Jones County.

Firefighters from Southwest Jones and the Mississippi Forestry Service fought a two acre brush fire off of Old Progress Road Tuesday afternoon. They were able to plow a fire break around the area and contain it quickly. The fire apparently started from embers still burning from a controlled burn from a week and a half ago.

About the same time Soso firefighters responded to a brush fire on Jones Barnes Road. Firefighters from Calhoun and Hebron were called in to assist.

Since the burn ban was instituted last Friday, Jones County firefighters have responded to nearly fifty brush fires and burn ban violations.

Jones County officials say the burn ban has been extended until further notice. Residents are reminded not to do any outside burning. Violators face being issued a citation by the Jones County Sheriff's Department.
