LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Today one of Laurel's finest received a special thank you from state leaders.

Lieutenant Governor Phil Bryant and Senator Chris McDaniel honored investigator Kim Stewart for an act of bravery.

Stewart was shot in the line duty when trying to apprehend an escaped convict from Jones County jail last December.

McDaniel said it's important to remember the men and women who serve and protect us.

McDaniel said "What he did in many ways was above and beyond the call of duty. He was injured doing something that most of us most would not have done and that is attempting to apprehend."

Stewart said he is extremely grateful for today's honor.

"I appreciate it.  It means a lot to me on this day.  It goes back to show that you that all law enforcement officers at Laurel Police Department work hard day in and day out and this is what we get in return a thank you for going out doing your job."
