NEW YORK (AP) - The man whose record label turned out such now-classic R&B hits as "Fantastic Voyage" and "Rock Steady" has died.

SOLAR Records founder Dick Griffey was 71 when he died Friday of complications from quadruple bypass surgery. His family said in a statement Tuesday that he died in Los Angeles.

Griffey was a key figure in black music. SOLAR's acts included the Whispers, Lakeside and Midnight Star.

Quincy Jones is hailing Griffey as "one of the great pioneering executives in the music business." He notes in his statement that Griffey's fingerprints were on some of the biggest R&B hits from the 1980s.
