HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Forrest County Chancery Building in downtown Hattiesburg was full of handshakes, hugs and well wishes Wednesday morning, honoring District Attorney Jon Mark Weathers who is stepping down form his position.

Weathers made the decision earlier this month and was presented a proclamation thanking him for his work representing the twelfth district. Weathers says it's the people he'll miss the most

"To be honest with you, a little sad, but also I'm humbled about all the support I've had in the last seven and a half years and these people taking time out of their work day to come today. I'm humbled by it, but it's going to be sad leaving," said Weathers.

Weathers' says he's not sure what's in store for him next but is thinking about going back into private practice. His resignation takes effect Friday, which is when current Assistant District Attorney Patricia Burchell will be sworn in as the new district attorney.
