The following is a press release from the city of Hattiesburg, MS:

Mayor Johnny L. DuPree joins together with schools throughout the world in celebrating International Walk to School Day. On Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.

A press conference will be held at Rowan Elementary announcing Wednesday, October 6, 2010 as International Walk to School Day.

The City of Hattiesburg joined together with Neel-Schaffer in organizing Hattiesburg's International Walk to School Day. Representatives from the Police and Fire Departments, the Mayor's Office, Neel-Schaffer, and several other organizations will be volunteering to lead walking groups on October 6th to local elementary schools. Grace Christian, Hawkins, Lillie Burney, Rowan, Thames and Woodley Elementary Schools will all be participating in International Walk to School Day.

"This year's iWalk Program is a part of the City's Safe Routes to Schools Program. Over the past year we have been able to increase the safety of our children walking to school by installing a number of sidewalks in neighborhoods and by having police officers closely monitor school zones. Our children are our most precious resource and their safety is a priority. We must continue to invest in all areas of their lives. I hope you will join me as we walk the children of Hattiesburg to school," commented Mayor Johnny L. DuPree.

For volunteers who are interested in walking or any additional information, please contact Jeanetta Bennett at (601) 545-4508 or one of the schools participating in International Walk to School Day.
