Southern Miss helps open counseling center for foster children

The following is a press release from The University of Southern Mississippi:

The School of Social Work at The University of Southern Mississippi has extended its Family Network Partnership to create the Family Counseling Center for children in the foster care system.

"The Family Counseling Center's mission is to empower, strengthen, and promote the best interests of foster families and to minimize multiple placements or placement disruption which can have long-term negative effects on foster children," said Laurie Risher, center program director. "We focus clinical attention on the family unit and strengthening the capacity of families to function effectively."

The Family Counseling Center, which opened in August, serves families with foster children ages 6 - 12. Therapeutic services are provided by clinical faculty members of the Southern Miss School of Social Work. Those clinicians also serve as supervisors for graduate students who are completing their internships with the center.

Professionals working with foster families can make referrals to the center by calling 601.582.3541.The Family Counseling Center is located at 913 S. Tipton in Hattiesburg, Miss.
