USM's Pride of Mississippi marching band is getting closer to meeting their goal for a trip to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. The Pride will be the first university in Mississippi to perform in the parade, they were invited by Macy's in 2008. In order to reach their goal of $300,000 for the trip, roughly $1000 per student, they will need to raise $50,000 more. Director of the School of Music, Dr. Michael Miles says they are staying positive as the deadline draws nearer.
"We've been keeping a real positive attitude about it and we feel like we'll make it. We feel like if people get the message, they'll want to help. We have a very generous community even in these difficult economic times, so it's been a long two year cycle of fundraising, and we're ready to close it up."
Miles also said no donation is too small. The band is set to leave the Monday before thanksgiving.
