WALTHALL COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Salem High School students are mourning the loss of one of their football players after a traffic accident Thursday.
Walthall County authorities say the accident happened around 4 p.m. Thursday following football practice when a car carrying four players lost control and hit a second vehicle on Rushing Town Road.
One player, a 16-year-old 10th grader was killed while two other players were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
School officials met with coaches and players Friday morning and have decided to move forward with Friday's scheduled homecoming game against Mt. Olive.
Coach Perry Coggin said, "We must somehow pick up our foot and take another step, primarily because that's what Jonathan would have wanted. That is what Jonathan would have done."
