HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Mississippi law enforcement and a Hub City prevention agency are working to help Forrest County area families get rid of their unused prescription medications.

DREAM of Hattiesburg, which works to stop substance abuse, and other agencies are joining forces this weekend to provide two drop off locations for medications including those sold over the counter.

Folks can dispose of their legal drugs at both the Forrest County Multi-Purpose Center and the Petal Walmart from 10:00AM until 2:00 PM Saturday, September 25th. Officials said old medications can be harmful to those taking them for a high rather than health purposes. Anne Nelson is the Alcohol Prevention Coordinator with DREAM and is working to publicize the event.

"People or students will go in and get the meds out of people's cabinets, grandparents, parents and use those drugs even though they are not prescribed for them and it's becoming a problem," said Nelson.

Nelson said some teens even sell prescription pills to other students at school, or have parties where kids choose from a variety of pills.
