Manhunt ends, suspect captured near Laurel

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A Jones County man being sought for a felony vandalism warrant is now in custody.

David Blackwell was arrested Wednesday morning on Palmer Road in the Pendorf Community after deputies received a tip.

Blackwell, 19, eluded officers Wednesday by fleeing into a wooded area off Hwy 84 east.

A Mississippi Department of Corrections officer spotted David Blackwell's car near Magnolia Road west of Laurel. The suspect jumped out of the car before it came to a stop and fled into the woods.

Blackwell was being sought on felony warrants by the Jones County Sheriff's Department. Two other people in the car were detained and questioned but later released.

Blackwell was already out of jail on probation after serving time for two counts of burglary and vehicle burglary.  The recent warrants accuse him of felony malicious mischief. Deputies also wanted to question him about a recent burglary in which guns were stolen. Corrections officials have now added probation violation to the list since he failed to show for his first probation hearing Tuesday.

The Mississippi All-Stars wrapped up its third practice at Hattiesburg High school ahead of the 31st Mississippi/Alabama All-star game on Saturday at noon. Although Saturday’s contest at Southern Miss’ M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg is just an exhibition, the Mississippi players are taking it seriously.
