Enrollment grows in Lamar County

PURVIS, MS. (WDAM) - Lamar County is one of the fastest growing areas of the state and the school district is no exception. Enrollment this year is currently over nine thousand students.

Superintendent Ben Burnett said that represents an increase of 425 students this year. Growth is being seen county wide in the communities of Oak Grove, Baxterville and Purvis.

Because of the increase in students some campuses are feeling a crunch, even in those schools that opened just a few years ago.

Burnett said, "Sumrall elementary and the two new elementarys at Oak Grove are really past capacity. The new elementary at Purvis lower has a little growing room, so it's in pretty good shape. But district wide our buildings are getting to capacity and past there again."

To deal with the space issue, a five year facility committee meets weekly to find growth solutions.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported there are now 12 cases of West Nile Virus in our state Thursday morning. Although, every case is serious, that number pales in comparison, to the 247 cases in 2012. Still, you have to put a human face onto these figures to really know what this virus is capable of doing.
