OAK GROVE, MS. (WDAM) - For the first year, about seventy prospective substitute teachers are being trained in Lamar County before they command a classroom.
The substitute training session took place Tuesday at Oak Grove Primary School. All substitute teachers in the Lamar County School District are mandated to complete the training.
The potential substitutes learned about district policies and how they can effectively educate students when a teacher is absent. Angela McCarty is an Assistant Principal at Oak Grove Primary School and helped organize the training.
McCarty said, "Well with over nine thousand children in the school district, we felt that when our teachers are not in the classroom then we want the most well trained people that we have available."
Lamar County's Superintendent, Ben Burnett, also spoke to the substitutes. He said often times, excellent subs become permanent teachers in the district.
