HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The list of suspects in the Hattiesburg Police Department break in last week now stands at ten. Nine of them are in custody and a warrant is out for the tenth.

"We had several agencies involved with this and through a corporative effort with them it just led us to where it led to," said police Capt. Michael Shappley.

Of the ten suspects, five of them had access into police headquarters. Three of them were city employees and two of them were work release inmates.

Two of the city employees, Cheryl Fluker and Victoria Shabazz worked for the city's action center hotline housed inside HPD. The other city employee, Felisha Taylor, worked as a housekeeper in the department.

"We hope that this sends a message, not only to the citizens of Hattiesburg but also to the employees of the city of Hattiesburg that these kinds of things will get you in trouble, ultimately could land you in jail," said Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree.

The two inmates on work release detail were Tyson Gaines and Paul Pettis. Pettis is the one suspect currently on the run, after escaping from the state work center in Hattiesburg.

Also arrested were Raphael Parkman of Gulfport, Rodney Burke of Gulfport, Melinda Buford of Oxford, Melinda Burke of Gulfport and Troy Wolverton of Laurel.

"We want to make the citizens understand they are still safe in our city," said DuPree.

Police aren't saying how all of the suspects are connected and aren't releasing many details about the case citing an ongoing investigation. Investigators do confirm two of the suspects actually entered an unused area of the department. All investigators would say was taken was marijuana. How much, they wouldn't say. The drugs have since been recovered.

"We feel fairly confident that we got all that was taken," said Shappley.

All of these arrests were made from Friday to Monday and with some of them being city employees, Mayor DuPree says it's a painful truth.

"My heart feels for and is hurt. I really feel for the families of the employees. These are all good people, made some wrong decisions, some wrong choices," said DuPree.

DuPree also says with trustees being involved with this case, the city will reevaluate how the work release system is done and increasing supervision to ensure this doesn't happen again.

"We'll do everything that we can to make sure that we put those safeguards in," said DuPree.
