LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The Masonite Mill in Laurel announced Wednesday they have laid off 83 employees saying market conditions are forcing the reduction in staff.
Masonite was founded in 1924 by William Mason. On the company web site they claim to be the undisputed leader in interior doors.
At one time the Laurel Mill was the cities largest employer, employing over 3000 people. After the current layoffs they now employ 458.
A company spokesperson says the decision to make the layoffs was made based on the current forecast for the demand of interior and exterior door facings.
They say they don't anticipate any further reductions in staff for the remainder of the year.
